Mechanical, Energy, Environmental & Manufacturing Engineering

What can I do with my degree?

There are many roles and companies that are open to you with your degree.  Prospects offers a good overview of jobs that may be of interest and sector specific information with their Engineering & manufacturing section. They also have a good sector overview within their Energy & utilities pages

You may also wish to look into Graduate Schemes. A graduate scheme differs from a graduate job in a few key characteristics. Around 50% of graduate schemes do not ask for a specific degree – they are open to graduates of any discipline.

Where to begin?

Key professional bodies include:

Useful jobs sites for finding relevant work may include:

  • Careerstructure - good for renewable and oil and gas vacancies
  • ENDS Jobsearch  and ENDS Directory - directory of companies
  • Gradcracker - specialises in graduate roles and student placements in engineering
  • Justengineers - big jobsite for engineers
  • Oilcareers is a key site from the many oil-related job sites
  • Scottish Renewables – contains a useful list of members many of which are employers in the renewable sector
  • Targetjobs - jobs and work experience in engineering and engineering design

Recruitment Agencies may also be useful to you when looking for summer work or graduate opportunities. Relevant agencies include Matchtech.

Speculative Applications

Given that Scotland is made up predominantly of Small to Medium sized enterprises, who tend to recruit on an "as-needed" basis and have little time or resources to allocate to advertising and recruitment, speculative approaches can be particularly successful.  We would encourage you to approach organisations to ask for experience opportunities.  Even work shadowing or visits to offices and sites can be helpful ways to gain an insight into a type of work and will allow you to network with professionals.  The links listed above will include some Scotland based directories of companies that you can approach speculatively.  You may also be able to find internships, volunteering, placement and work experience opportunities from the above links.
