  Our Charges and Fines

Late returns

The books and other items in the library are available to a very large number of people, and many are in constantly high demand. With Intelligent Loans, borrowed items will renew automatically but if a borrowed item is requested, it will not renew automatically (see our Intelligent Loans page for more information).

We will recall the item and ask you to return it within 7 days or by the due date if less than 7 days. If you return a recalled item late, or fail to return a recalled item at all, we will ask you to pay a fine.

If you have overdue recalled items or fines on your account you will be unable to borrow new items. Existing loans which have not been requested will renew automatically.

To help you keep up to date with your loans, we will send you a week Activity Report and you can also check the due dates on LibrarySearch/My Account.

We'll ask you to pay:
£1 per item per day for items that have been recalled
£1 per item per hour for items on Reserve Collection and 3 Hour loans
£5 per laptop per day

If you have fines you will not be able to borrow new items. Access to other services such as study room bookings will also be affected.

Library fines can be paid by cash or card in person or by card over the phone.

If you don't return a loan by the maximum or recalled due date, you will be blocked from borrowing until it's returned. We will send you Overdue Reminders and after 14 days we will assume the item as Lost. We will send you a Lost Item bill for the replacement cost, plus a £10 administrative charge. You can supply a replacement copy of the same or a later edition if you prefer.

Replacement of lost or damaged item

If you have lost or damaged an item please tell us as soon as possible.

We will send you a Lost Item bill for the current replacement cost found via our supplier, plus a £10 administrative charge.  You can supply a replacement copy of the same or a later edition if you prefer.

If you have any questions, please contact us by email: library@napier.ac.uk or telephone: 0131 455 3500.

Fine appeals

If you have been absent from university due to illness or other extenuating circumstances which have prevented you from returning loans it may be possible for some or all of the fines to be waived. Please complete a fine appeal form and submit it along with the supporting evidence.
