  Keeping Up to Date

Keeping up to date

New research is being published all the time, and the field of research is changing faster than ever before. How do you keep up to date?

There are a number of ways that you can organise your web environment so that the research literature comes direct to you.

1. Table of Contents (TOCs) services

Get automatically alerted with the tables of contents (TOC) of your favourite journals when they are published.

Here are two major services which allow you to set up email alerts or RSS feeds:
  • Zetoc - http://zetoc.jisc.ac.uk/
A Mimas database with access to British Library data, Zetoc covers over 29,000 current journals and more than 52 million article citations and conference proceedings. Note: You need to login to set up email alerts. Select 'Alerts', find 'Edinburgh Napier University' and log in using your usual University login.
  • JournalTOCs - http://www.journaltocs.ac.uk/
A free JISC-funded Heriot Watt University database, covers over 26,000 journals.  No need to login.

2. RSS feeds

Get news feeds telling you when websites have added new content.

3. Search alerts in specific databases

Many databases offer you the option to save searches and set up email alerts. Check your favourite database.

4. Search alerts in LibrarySearch

You can save a search in LibrarySearch and set up email alerts.  The LibrarySearch alerts helpsheet has full instructions.
