About Merchiston Library

Merchiston Library is a bright attractive environment providing study spaces designed to suit a variety of learning styles. Zones 1 & 2 offer study space with study pods and circular tables, Zone 3 is our silent room, Zones 4 & 5 offer quieter study space around the book stock. There is a wide variety of material which supports the diverse subjects taught on campus.

Library Services

  • Use LibrarySearch to find books, e-books, online journal articles and more. Items can be borrowed or returned using the self-service kiosks in the library.
  • Use our computer and multi-functional device facilities: we have 29 networked computers, eight Macs and three multi-functional devices (for printing, copying and scanning). There are power points for laptops on most floors and Wi-Fi is available throughout.
  • There are nine group study rooms, all of which have a PC and whiteboard, most also have plasma screens.
  • Study in our Silent area, Zone 3, this is a bright room including a mezzanine for silent study, there are power sockets around the room for charging your own devices.
  • Equipment for disabled students and individual needs is available.

  • Two study pods, Lapsafe laptop loan.
  • Two multi-functional devices (for printing, copying and scanning).

Zone 2 – Quiet & Group Study

  • Four study pods, four group study rooms, PCs, and relaxed seating area.
  • One multi-functional device (for printing, copying and scanning).
  • Family Room - Room 1 on Resource Booker.
  • Stevenson Collection 24 hour area (term time)
  • Adjustable desk

Zone 3 – Silent Area

  • Silent study only - Mobile phones switched to silent and no conversation.
  • 24 hour area (term time)

Zone 4 – Social Study

  • Self-service kiosk.
  • Study tables.
  • 24-hr study area (term time)

Zone 5 – Quiet Study

  • Three group study rooms (two downstairs, one upstairs), only available during Opening Hours.
  • Books, journals, music scores, and reference materials.
  • Downstairs - Books 001-649, Journals A-Z, Music Scores, CDs, Study Rooms.
  • Upstairs – Books 650-999, Wellbeing Collection.
  • Quiet study. Phones switched to silent, minimal conversation
