Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave my child in a Family Study Room just for a minute?

It’s really important that you never leave your child/children unattended, not even for a few seconds. You are responsible for your child/children all the time you are on campus. University staff are not child minders so please don’t ask them to look after your children.

Can students from other campuses use the Family Study Rooms?

Yes, of course. All Edinburgh Napier University students can book and use the Family Study Rooms. Use Resource Booker to make a booking.

Can I use a Family Study Room if I don’t have my child with me?

This is the only study room that can be booked and used by students accompanied by children. If the room is free, students without children can book it.

I’m not a student at Edinburgh Napier University, can I use a Family Study Room?

These rooms are only available to students at Edinburgh Napier University.

How many people can use the Family Study Rooms?

The Craiglockhart Family Study Room can be used by up to five people, and the Merchiston Family Study Room up to four people. For insurance purposes, you need to tell us how many children you’ll bring with you when you book.

What if my kids make noise in a Family Study Room?

Realistically, we know children can sometimes make a bit of noise so we just ask you to use your common sense. It’s likely there will be students studying nearby and in the group study rooms next door. To help keep the kids amused, we’ve put a box of toys in the room for them to play with. Study rooms are places where students can talk about their work together so they are not quiet or silent places to study. Both adults and kids need to take a break sometimes and when you need them, the cafés are nearby.

Where can I find baby changing facilities?

  • Craiglockhart  - The baby changing facilities are in room 1.31 (you’ll find it on the left as you enter the Hydra Cafe).
  • Merchiston -There are baby changing facilities in the two toilets in the main foyer.
We’ve gathered together some practical ‘Good to know’ information displayed in the Family Study Rooms.

If I’m in a Family Study Room, can I extend my booking?

The family study rooms are bookable for a maximum of two hours a day. If there is no booking after your time slot, you can stay in the room. If there is a booking, you will be asked to vacate for the next students.

How do I book a slot in a Family Study Room?

Use Resource Booker to book either a 30 minute, 1 hour or 2 hour time slot up to two weeks in advance. For insurance purposes, you need to tell us how many children you’ll bring with you when you make a booking.

Where are the Family Study Rooms?

Craiglockhart – It’s in Study Room 0/19. As you enter the Library, it is the first glass-walled room on the left hand side.

Merchiston - It’s in Study Room 1 in Merchiston Library. Use either the ramp or stairs to go down to Zone 2. Study Room 1 is on your left.

Can I just turn up and use a Family Study Room without booking?

To avoid the disappointment of a wasted journey if the room is fully booked, use Resource Booker to book a 30 minute, one hour or two hour slot.

I’m a member of staff at Edinburgh Napier University, can I use a Family Study Room if I bring my kids?

These rooms are for students registered on a module or course at Edinburgh Napier University. If this applies to you and you’re studying for your course, yes you can make bookings and use the rooms.
