Preparing for university
Get a head start on your university journey by making sure you're prepared. From claiming your council tax exemption to getting registered with a doctor, there are lots of things you can do to make sure you're ready to get started.
Council tax
Most full-time students are exempt from paying council tax. Learn how to make sure your student record is up to date and confirm your term-time address.
Free bus travel
If you're under 22 years old and live in Scotland for more than six months of the year, you can apply for an entitlement card for free bus travel around all of Scotland.
Register with a doctor
It's important to register with a local doctor (GP) and dentist so you can easily access health services and take advantage of any free vaccinations you might need.
Accommodation
Equipment for your studies
You'll need to consider buying essential equipment to help in your studies, including a laptop and textbooks. You can get financial help if you need assistance with these purchases.

To register to vote online, you need just five minutes and your National Insurance number. To find out if you’re already registered to vote, you can contact your local Electoral Registration Office.
If you're a student, you may be able to register to vote at both your home address and your term-time address, but you'll need to choose one address and vote in only that area.
