Sign Language Week
British Sign Language is an official language of Scotland, and Edinburgh Napier is committed to making our campus a welcoming, accessible place for BSL users. Whether you're curious about learning to sign, interested in accessibility, or just want to try something completely new, this is your chance to start communicating in a whole new way.
BSL isn't just about communication, it's about inclusion, connection, and opening up new possibilities.
What's happening this week?
- Come to our online film screening of 'Signs & Gestures: a short film with dialogues in BSL' by Ita Jansen, Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Creative Industries. Join online at 2pm on Wednesday 18 March.
- Join Dr Tree Burton, SACI music lecturer and composer, for an inspiring session where she'll share her personal experiences of hearing loss and give you your first steps into the world of BSL. 1pm on Thursday 19 March, Merchiston campus, Room F10
What we're doing to support BSL
Back in 2024, we relaunched our BSL Plan which outlines commitments in four key areas:
- Increasing access to our service for BSL users
- Improving the experience of Deaf BSL using staff and students
- Strengthening curriculum and research impact
- Increasing engagement with our BSL Plan
As well as a range of actions detailed in the plan, we’re taking forward tangible activities:
- We've renewed our close working with the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt and Queen Margaret universities through an updated Memorandum of Understanding which outlines how the Edinburgh-based universities share information, experience and skills in delivering teaching, research and service to the community in the areas of BSL and Deaf Studies.
- We're working closely with the EdSign Group, which brings together universities in academic knowledge exchange and support events and engagement.
