Returnable cup scheme launching on campus

We're delighted to announce that the University is taking a major step towards reducing our environmental impact by introducing a returnable cup scheme at Sighthill campus.

As part of our commitment to cutting single‑use waste, we've partnered with Cauli to offer a tap & go scheme. You'll have the option to borrow a cup when buying a drink, whether you're eating in or taking it away. You'll then have seven days to return the cup free of charge. There's no need to remember your own cup (though you are still welcome to do so!) and no waste from disposable packaging.

The scheme launches at Sighthill campus on Monday 15 June, with Craiglockhart and Merchiston joining in 2027.

For more information on how the scheme works, visit the Food on campus pages.

Why we're introducing a returnable cup scheme

We're committed to reducing single-use items in our catering outlets, and this is the first step towards that goal. From August, we’ll be introducing a 50p charge for single-use paper cups as we work towards phasing them out entirely.

Around a third of global waste comes from packaging, including single-use food and drink containers. Reusable packaging can reduce waste and associated emissions by up to 92%.

After just two uses, these cups begin to deliver a net CO₂ saving. This initiative is expected to save several tonnes of CO₂ each year. To find out more about our environmental sustainability work, visit napier.ac.uk/environment
