Drugs, alcohol and sexual safety
While Edinburgh is generally a safe place to live, work and study, it is important to look after your personal safety and be aware of steps you can take to reduce risks to your health and wellbeing. We've put together a collection of resources you might find helpful.
Our commitment to reducing harm
Edinburgh Napier University is committed to student safety, and we follow the Universities UK's Harm Reduction Guidance.
While we do not condone drug or alcohol use or misuse, we understand that it exists in society and in our community. We want to assure you that it is safe for you to come forward if you need help or are struggling with issues around drug or alcohol use. You might also be affected by someone else’s use and need a space to speak about this.
For further support, please reach out to our wellbeing services.
Drink spiking
Although most people associate spiking with drugs, alcohol is the most common substance used to spike drinks. Drink spiking may be done with the intent of stealing from the victim, assaulting the victim, or as a prank.
Learn how to keep yourself and your friends safe on nights out, as well as what to do if you think you have been spiked and the steps we'll take if we learn somebody has carried out a spiking attack.

Staying safe on nights out
We know a big part of university life is meeting new people and socialising - and Edinburgh is a fantastic city to be in! But you can take simple measures to keep yourself and your friends safe on nights out, such as:
- Plan how to get home
- Keep your phone on you and make sure it's fully charged before you head out
- Don't leave your drinks unattended - and if you do, leave it and get a new one
- Be sensible about how much alcohol you drink and keep an eye on any friends who look vulnerable
- Stick with friends when you leave and operate a buddy system to make sure everyone gets home safe
- Keep enough money to pay for your journey home at the end of the night
