CVs and cover letters

A CV is a concise, factual document showcasing your skills, qualifications and experience to prospective employers. It is a marketing tool and it must be tailored to the job and employer.

A cover letter elaborates on the information in your CV. It outlines your knowledge, skills and experience. It is your opportunity to describe your motivations and explain why you are the best candidate for the position.

For guidance on creative CVs and portfolios, please see our dedicated Creative applications guide.

Application forms

Application forms are usually the first step of the application process and help employers decide which candidates progress to the next stage. Completing an application form takes time and it must demonstrate that you have the relevant knowledge, skills and experience.

Organisations may receive hundreds of applications, so your application form should be tailored and engaging.

Psychometric tests

Many graduate employers use psychometric tests to shortlist candidates. Tests are commonly used across all sectors and often at the start of the recruitment process.

Psychometric tests provide a measurable assessment of a candidate's suitability for a job, and include aptitude and ability tests, personality tests, and situational judgement tests.

Interviews and assessment centres

Being invited to interview means that an employer feels you have the potential to fulfil the job requirements. In a job interview the employer wants to learn more about the relevant knowledge, skills and experience included in your written application.

Interviews may take place face to face, online, over the telephone or be pre-recorded. They usually last between 30 minutes to an hour and can include questions, tests and exercises.

Assessment centres are made up of a range of activities designed to test your motivation and skills to evaluate your suitability for a job position.
