If you’re thinking of leaving

If you're finding things tough, there are a number of services and staff available to support you. We know things may seem difficult now, but most students who reach out and make use of our support services decide to stay on at university.

However, if you decide that it's just not for you, we will help you end or suspend your studies in the least stressful way.

Where to start

If you are struggling with your studies, speak with your Personal Development Tutor (PDT), your module leader or your programme leader. They care about you and your education. If you've not been in touch with them, this is a good place to start. They can give you advice on how to ask for extensions and how our Fit to Sit process can help you with extenuating circumstances.

If you feel like you need to take a break, you can choose to suspend (pause) your studies rather than leave the university completely. Read our full information about suspended studies to see if that might be the right choice for you.

Sources of support

Academic Skills

The Academic Skills team can help you with all aspects of your learning and studying, including referencing, active reading and note-taking, planning and drafting essays and reports and managing large projects.

Learn more about the support available on our Academic Skills pages.

Accommodation

If you are staying in our Edinburgh Napier student accommodation, you should discuss your plans with them to understand the implications of leaving during your rental contract.

Career options

A meeting with a Careers Development Consultant might be useful – they can help you to explore the career options of your current programme and alternatives if you decide you want to leave or suspend your studies.

Fees and finance

If you leave the University, there may be financial implications related to fees. Our Fees department will be able to clarify your situation - email them at fees@napier.ac.uk.

The ENSA Advice service can also guide you to consider the implications of leaving and to ensure your finances are in order.

You should also get in touch with your funding body (e.g., SAAS) to find out about future funding or fees for a change of course.

Remember, if you are struggling with your finances, our Student Funding team can provide advice and support.

International students

If you are studying at the University and hold a student visa, please get in touch with International Support before considering leaving.

IT issues

If an IT issue is causing you difficulty, contact Information Services (IS) for help:

From finding out how to access lecture recordings to how to book a PC if you're going onto campus, IS can help with lots of things.

The University also has a number of laptops available for student use. For short-term laptop loans, please use the self-service lockers available at our libraries, Bainfield Student Accommodation and the Jack Kilby Computing Centre.

Timetabling and support

Our School Offices, located on each campus, are useful sources of advice on how and where to get assistance. The School Support Service can answer queries and signpost you to further help. They can also give advice on timetables and requests for changes, which may help you balance your studies and home life. If in doubt, just ask!

Find out more about our School Offices.

Wellbeing

If you need support with an aspect of your wellbeing, the Student Wellbeing & Inclusion team is here to help you feel content, healthy and supported. Please have a look at our online resources and come and talk with us if you are experiencing any difficulties. Support is available from:

If you decide to leave

If you still feel like suspending your studies or leaving is your best option, the first thing you need to do is speak to your programme leader. If they are not available, speak to your Personal Development Tutor (PDT).

You should also contact the Fees department and your funding body before you withdraw so you are fully aware of any financial implications of withdrawing. Read more information about the financial side of leaving and minimise the risk of you being overpaid your student finance.
