  Getting Inside

School of Applied Sciences

Having real life experience in the workplace is a huge benefit when you come to face competitive recruitment processes after graduation. As an applied and inclusive University we believe that building on the knowledge and skills that you learn in the classroom, by making strong partnerships with industry through networking opportunities and meaningful work experience, forms a key part of your development.

Short term work placements are a great way for you to gain valuable insights into a specific industry and further your professional network. Due to this our Getting Inside programme is one of the most popular student employability programmes within the School of Applied Sciences.
Unique to this school, the Getting Inside programme offers the opportunity for 3rd and 4th year students studying on our Life Science, Criminology, Psychology, Social Science and Sport courses, as well as Master’s Students on our Applied Criminology & Forensic Psychology Course to apply for a one week work placement with one of our partner employers in their chosen industry.
Placements will run from the Monday to the Thursday of our Inter-Trimester week, 13 – 16 May. Successful students (and their partnered employers) are then invited back into the University on Friday 17 May for a morning of reflecting on and celebrating your experiences on placement, followed by a networking lunch opportunity.

Getting A Placement

We’ve aimed to make the process as authentic and close to external graduate recruitment practice as possible.
There are two key stages to your application:
Submissions are accepted for Sport & Exercise Sciences, Social Science, Psychology & Criminology Students between the 27 Feb and 6 March 2019. The Student Futures Recruitment Team will shortlist applications and update students on the outcome of this by 7 March

Stage 2: Successful candidates will be invited to attend an assessment centre aligned to your subject group, on the dates below.
At the end of the assessment centre you will have a short competency based interview.
You will be assessed by a mixture of the Student Futures Team, a selection of our placement employers
and some of our relevant academic colleagues.
After the assessments have been conducted the Recruitment Team will inform you if you have been successful or not and will then match you with the most relevant employer.
Before your placement you will be expected to attend a short workshop, led by our Careers & Development Team, to help you think about how to get the most out of your placement. This will take place on 8 April.

If you would like to hear more about this opportunity, or have any questions on the application process or our partner employers, please contact Kirsty McKay.
Assessment Centre Dates:
  • Sport & Exercise Sciences, Social Sciences, Criminology & Psychology: 15 March
