  Loan Process Overview

We begin reviewing applications for federal aid in April each year

If you would like to apply for US Federal Loans then you must firstly establish your eligibility by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must do this online at When completing your FAFSA, you must list Edinburgh Napier University as your school.  Our school code is G34184.

Federal and State deadlines for completing the FAFSA can be found on their website. There is also a very good video that's worth watching.

Once you have submitted your FAFSA, a Student Aid Report (SAR) is produced. We need this document to determine your loan eligibility.

As we are a foreign school, even if you have listed Edinburgh Napier University as your school, your SAR will not be sent to us automatically by the US Department of Education. Therefore please ensure that you email us at to confirm that you have submitted your FAFSA.

Once we have reviewed confirmation that you have completed your FAFSA, we will provide you with a cost of attendance for your programme from April onwards. This will give you an indication of your expected costs for the duration of your studies.  You can then give us indication of what you intend to borrow and we will review your SAR.  You will also need to confirm your programme information, any scholarships received and complete a number of loan documents required for each loan.

In due course, when you have carried out the relevant ‘next steps’ outlined by the University, your loans will be originated. These ‘next steps’ include completing entrance counselling and signing Master Promissory Notes for each loan you are borrowing.

Please note you will have to complete a FAFSA and carry out the necessary steps for each year of study here.

Please use the checklist below to make sure you have completed all the relevant steps. There's also a handy flowchart which you may find useful
