Family Study Room

At Merchiston Library we’ve introduced a Family Study Room for students who want to have their children with them while they study. This is for a limited period of time so we can see if you like it and use it. To use the room, you must make a booking as there’s a limit on the number of people allowed in the room at any one time. Just like other Group Study Rooms it can be booked in one hour or two hour slots, up to a week in advance.

Facilities for children

For younger children, there’s a small table and chairs, some toys in a toy box and some child-sized bean bags. Older children can use the chairs and table in the room. Free guest wi-fi is available. For students, there is a PC and table and chairs in the room.

A few things to remember

  • Never leave your child unattended. You are responsible for your child's safety and behaviour.
  • Children must not be unsupervised in the Library. If your child needs to go to the toilet, you need to take them.
  • The Family Study Room is for Edinburgh Napier University students who are accompanied by their child/children.
  • Don’t log in to the computer and let your child use it.
  • Library resources aren’t censored and you are responsible for monitoring what your child sees.
  • Leave the room in good condition for the next occupants.
  • Report any issues that need attention in the room to Help Desk staff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave my child in the Family Study Room just for a minute?

It’s really important that you never leave your child/children unattended, not even for a few seconds. You are responsible for your child/children all the time you are on campus. University staff are not child minders so please don’t ask them to look after your children.

Can students from other campuses use the Family Study Room?

Yes, of course. All Edinburgh Napier University students can book and use the Family Study Room. Use Resource Booker to book and make a booking.

Can I use the Family Study Room if I don’t have my child with me?

This is the only study room that can be booked and used by students accompanied by children. If the room is free, students without children can book it.

I’m not a student at Edinburgh Napier University, can I use the Family Study Room?

This room is only available to students at Edinburgh Napier University.

How many people can use the Family Study Room?

The room can be used by up to four people. For insurance purposes, you need to tell us how many children you’ll bring with you.

What if my kids make a noise in the Family Study Room?

Realistically, we know children can sometimes make a bit of noise so we just ask you to use your common sense. It’s likely there will be students studying nearby and in the group study room next door. To help keep the kids amused, we’ve put a box of toys in the room for them to play with. Study rooms are places where students can talk about their work together so they are not quiet or silent places to study. Both adults and kids need to take a break sometimes and when you need them, the Canteen and Café are nearby.

Are there baby changing facilities near the Family Study Room at Merchiston campus?

There are baby changing facilities in the two toilets in the main foyer. We’ve gathered together some practical ‘Good to know’ information displayed in the Family Study Room.

If I’m in the Family Study Room, can I extend my booking?

The room is bookable for a maximum of two hours a day. If there is no booking after your time slot, you can stay in the room. If there is a booking, you will be asked to vacate for the next students.

How do I book a slot in the Family Study Room?

Use Resource Booker to book either a 30 minute, 1 hour or 2 hour time slot up to one week in advance. For insurance purposes, you need to tell us how many children you’ll bring with you when you make a booking.

Where is the Family Study Room?

It’s in Study Room 1 in Merchiston Library. Use either the ramp or stairs to go down to Zone 2. Study Room 1 is on your left.

Are there any toys and kids furniture in the Family Study Room?

For younger kids, there’s a children’s table and three chairs plus three junior bean bags and some toys. For older children and students, there’s a table and chairs. Guest wi-fi is available in the room. For students there is one computer at a desk and two operator chairs.

Can I just turn up and use the Family Study Room without booking?

To avoid the disappointment of a wasted journey if the room is fully booked, use Resource Booker to book a 30 minute, one hour or two hour slot.

I’m a member of staff at Edinburgh Napier University, can I use the Family Study Room if I bring my kids?

This room is for students registered on a module or course at Edinburgh Napier University. If this applies to you and you’re studying for your course, yes you can make bookings and use this room.

Can I give some feedback to the Library about the Family Study Room?

Yes! We really want to hear your feedback. The Family Study Room has been introduced as a pilot so we can see if you like this service, find it useful and importantly, also use it. Space on Merchiston campus is in short supply so we need you to use the room and to suggest any improvements we can make. We’d love to hear what you think about it. This is a new initiative so we expect we’ll need to make a few changes to the room and the booking process in the future.
