Remembrance Day gatherings
Students are warmly invited to Remembrance Day gatherings across our three campuses on Monday 11 November.
- Sighthill – LRC1
- Craiglockhart – Rivers Suite
- Merchiston – C34a
You are invited to gather at 10.55am when a poem will be read before we observe the silence at 11am. After the two-minute silence, those attending are welcome to stay for refreshments and a poppy cupcake.
We are also proud to support Poppyscotland's Light Up Red campaign this year by lighting up the Lindsay Stewart Lecture Theatre at our Craiglockhart Campus. You will notice our iconic "egg" will be red for the week leading to Armistice Day.
What is Remembrance Day?
On Saturday 11 November, people across the United Kingdom acknowledge Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day as it is also known. This day marks the day that World War One (WWI) ended in 1918.To remember those who died during WWI, and in any conflict since, there is a two-minute silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month each year. It is also a time to take a moment to think of families who live with the loss of their loved one every day and remember service personnel who have been wounded, physically and mentally, during any service-related activities.
It's a day of reflection where we unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to take a few minutes to remember those who have died or been left with life-changing injuries while fighting or carrying out humanitarian and peace keeping missions on behalf of their countries. Two minutes doesn’t often feel long enough but is a good place to start.
We appreciate that Remembrance Day can be a difficult time for people and we wish to highlight that support is available from our Student Wellbeing team and our Chaplaincy service. For those with a service background, Rock2Recovery provides support to those with PTSD.
