Scotland's Climate Week

Scotland's Climate Week takes place from 29 September – 5 October and we’re encouraging the whole Edinburgh Napier community to get involved in our Every Action Counts campaign.

We know that many targets can only be reached through collective, consistent action. Every Action Counts focuses on people-powered change that makes sustainability practical and achievable for everyone.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about participation. Your efforts, big and small, are helping us move closer to a more sustainable future.

Get involved in Every Action Counts:

  • Sign up for our free Climate Week workshop on Thursday 2 October for advice on how to reduce energy usage in your home.
  • Join ENSA's beach clean at Portobello on Saturday 4 October
  • Leave the car at home and walk, wheel, cycle or use public transport to get to and from campus
  • Switch off before you go – remember to power down screens, laptops and lights when you are no longer using them
  • Check out our Sustainability at Home guide for ideas on how you can reduce energy and waste
  • Share your ideas and initiatives by emailing environment@napier.ac.uk

How your actions are making a difference

Reviewing our 2024/25 academic year, we reduced electricity consumption by 2.5% and gas consumption by 18.5% compared to 2023/24. There are a number of reasons for the reduction, including projects and initiatives led by Property & Facilities and the significant contribution of positive actions from across the University community.

You’ll see this information displayed on our digital screens around campus throughout the year as a reminder that every action really does count!

  • Our catering team has been awarded its first star rating in the 2025 Food Made Good Standard.
  • Our biomedical teaching and microbiology research labs gained gold and silver status by reducing their environmental impact.
  • Thanks to our electric calorifier project, most of the hot water we used in our buildings over the summer was generated using electricity, not gas.

What are we doing next?

We want to thank everyone for their contributions towards last year’s reduction in gas and electricity, but we need to keep going. Our ambition is to become a Net Zero Carbon university, and to do that, we'll all need to work together.

As we start to prepare our heating systems for the months ahead, please do all you can to use and retain heat efficiently, for example closing windows and doors and remembering to take a cosy jumper with you.

You can keep updated on our sustainability work through our campus boards, or read the latest information available at napier.ac.uk/environment

Thank you for all your efforts, and if you have any suggestions for other work we can be doing in this area, please email environment@napier.ac.uk
