JKCC closure and some University services unavailable

To maintain the security and resilience of the University’s systems and services, Information Services will be replacing the Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) at Merchiston on the weekend of Friday 29 August to Sunday 31 August (inclusive).

 

This will involve shutting down all servers and services based in the main Merchiston server room, meaning that a number of University services will be unavailable for the duration of the work.

 

Whilst Merchiston campus will remain open for the duration of the work, the Jack Kilby Computer Centre (JKCC) be closed from 10pm on Thursday 28 August until 8am on Monday 1 September to allow time for pre-work preparation and to clear up once the work is complete.

 

The timings of this work have been agreed to minimise disruption. 

 

Which services will be unavailable?

The key University systems and services that will be unavailable from Friday 29 August until Sunday 31 August include but are not limited to:

  • Moodle Video
  • Career Hub
  • XN Sport (used by Engage)
  • Scan R
  • ENUCC (Edinburgh Napier University Compute Cluster) - theENUCCwillnot accept any new jobsfrom Monday 25 August until Monday 1 September
  • Some school specific servers including: VSOC, REMAR project, SACI Newsroom, SCEBE, SMOTS.

Due to the extensive nature of the work please consider all services “at risk” and therefore may not be available for the duration of the work.

Please note:  there will be no backups of networked drives for the duration of the work so if you are working on important files on your H drive, please ensure you take a local backup.

 

As the JKCC is closed, are there any other open access computers I can use?

Merchiston library will remain open, as will the libraries and computer suites at Craiglockhart and Sighthill.  You can use open access computers in any of these locations.

IT support will be available at published times from Merchiston library during the closure. 

Out with the standard helpdesk opening hours of Monday to Friday, 8:45am - 4:45pm, IT support will be provided by the NorMAN Helpline.
