Edinburgh Napier Security Manager named AUCSO Security Manager of the Year

Edinburgh Napier University’s Russell Wardale has been recognised as Security Manager of the Year at the 2025 AUCSO (Association of University Chief Security Officers) Awards, highlighting his leadership and innovation in improving campus safety and wellbeing for students and staff.

Russell led the successful implementation of SafeZone at Edinburgh Napier, improving University response times and introducing modern solutions which contribute to a safer campus environment.

His efforts have also supported some of the most vulnerable members of the University community, offering tailored safety measures including discreet alert tools and direct contact with the security team.

Russell’s commitment extends beyond the University. He actively contributes to national security conversations through AUCSO and CONTEST groups and recently shared his experience with SafeZone at a national conference. He also helped bring a NACTSO advisor to campus for a physical security audit and supports efforts to prepare for Martyn’s Law.

Under his leadership, the security team has won two internal awards: the Outstanding Student Experience award and the Pride of Napier, both reflecting the team’s dedication to campus safety.

Russell works in close partnership with the University’s Wellbeing & Inclusion team and is a key member of groups focusing on suicide prevention and harm reduction.

This award recognises his ongoing commitment to safety, innovation, and student support, and reflects Edinburgh Napier’s wider ambition to provide a secure and welcoming environment for all.
