In-sessional English Language Support

Are you a student who speaks English as your 2nd, 3rd, 4th language? Do you speak English as your 1st language but are from a different educational system to the UK?

We are here to help you with your Academic English and thereby help you become more familiar with the expectations of the UK system.

In-sessional English Language Support is free.

In-Sessional English Language support is run by the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) department. Our tutors have years of experience in supporting students and helping them to improve their English. Please enrol on our Moodle page.

The In-sessional English Language Support we offer consists of:

  • Writing Workshops
  • One-to-one Support Sessions

Writing Workshops

Writing workshops are two hours long and will usually be divided into two parts:

Part 1 (1 hour):
In the first hour you will be introduced to the topic of the workshop through presentations and activities.

Part 2 (1 hour):
In the second hour you can choose to either complete a practice writing exercise and receive feedback (in the following workshop) and/or bring along an assignment you are writing and work on that/receive feedback (where possible).

For trimester 2 of 2021/22, writing workshops will be taught online. There’s no need to book these, just follow the link and turn up! However, there is a maximum number of students so don’t be late! The tutor may ask you to leave if the class is full.

One-to-one Support Sessions

If you need more personalised support with your academic writing, you can book a one-to-one Support Session. These sessions are 30 minutes long and give you the opportunity to discuss your written work with one of our tutors.

For trimester 2 of 2021/22, one-to-one Support Sessions will be taught online via Webex or taught face-to-face at Craiglockhart campus so you can choose whether you would prefer to meet the tutor face-to-face or online. To book a one-to-one Support Session, you should email: You can book a maximum of two sessions per trimester.
