In-sessional English language support

Are you an international student? Is English your 2nd, 3rd, 4th language? Do you speak English as your 1st language but are from a different educational system to the UK?

We are here to help you with your Academic English and help you to become more familiar with the expectations of the UK system.

In-sessional English for Academic Purposes Support is free.

In-Sessional English Language support is run by the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) department. Our tutors have years of experience in supporting students and helping them to improve their English and their transition to a UK university environment.. Please enrol on our Moodle page.

The In-sessional English Language Support we offer consists of:

Support Workshops

Support workshops are two hours long and are designed to help you with many of the English language and academic skills you will need as you study with us at Napier.

We will be flexible and do our best to respond to your needs as we progress through the trimester.

In trimester 2 of 2024/25 we have an exciting program of online support workshops to help you get the most out of your time studying at Napier. You are welcome to enrol on one or more of these workshop programs.

  • Online Writing Workshop for Taught Postgraduates

For trimester 2 of 2024/25, Support workshops will take place online. If you would like to be enrolled, please email EAP.Enquiries@napier.ac.uk and give your full name, Napier ID and programme of study. Once enrolled, you are expected to attend the workshops every week until week 15 of the trimester.

One-to-one Support Sessions

If you need more personalised support with your academic writing, you can book a one-to-one Support Session. These sessions are 30 minutes long and give you the opportunity to discuss your written work with one of our tutors.

For trimester 2 of 2024/25, the one-to-one Support Sessions can be taken either online or in-person on campus. To book a one-to-one Support Session, you should email EAP.Enquiries@napier.ac.uk. Please specify if you would prefer to meet online or in person on campus. You can only book one tutorial at a time, however you can have several tutorials throughout the trimester.

Online Support Workshops

Tuesday 2pm - 4pm: Language and communication - to improve your English language skills, particularly in Writing and Speaking. If English is your second language, this is a great opportunity to improve your skills in a way that will help with your academic work.

Thursday 2pm - 4pm: Online Writing Workshop for Undergraduates - to help you with the skills you will need in your undergraduate degree course. We can practice skills that are often challenging, such as structuring your writing, comparing and contrasting, linking sentences together, and using and referencing your sources.

Thursday 2pm - 4pm: Online Writing Workshop for Research Postgraduates - to help you with your research postgraduate course. We can discuss and practice skills related to writing research proposals, critically reviewing research papers, and distinguishing your own work from that of others,

Friday 10am - 12pm: Online Writing Workshop for Taught Postgraduates - To help you with the skills you will need for your taught postgraduate course. We can help you to build skills such as critical thinking, using evidence effectively, paraphrasing, and structuring your arguments effectively.
