Environmental Sustainability

We will achieve net zero carbon in our operations by 2030 at the latest. We will also seek to minimise both our wider and legacy carbon footprint and also influence sustainable practices within and beyond our campuses.

The information and links below provide a brief overview of our work, including areas students can get involved in. If you'd like more details on the full scope of our sustainability work and commitments, please visit our main Environmental Sustainability website.

You can also keep up to date with all the latest news and events by following us on Twitter and Facebook.

Our Environmental Sustainability Strategy

We have developed a new Environmental Sustainability Strategy which builds upon our academic and research excellence, achievements and projects carried out to date, as well as our existing partnerships with a wide range of bodies within Scotland and beyond.

At Edinburgh Napier University, we are committed to achieving net zero carbon in our operations by 2030 at the latest.

Working together, we are empowering individuals, teams and wider community-led groups, asking them to take ownership, responsibility and action so that we can drive our progress towards net zero

We are committed. Developing new innovative ways to tackle recycling single-use plastics in our labs. Making use of the green spaces on our campuses to grow sustainably.

We are determined. Reducing the amount of meat we serve in our catering outlets through our meat-free Monday initiative. Embedding sustainability into our curriculum with a new module open to all students. Supporting students and staff to choose different ways of traveling to campus.

We are purposeful. Swapping our vehicles and updating our existing electricity contract to procure 100% renewable electricity. Making sure our student voices are heard in key decisions. We are making a difference together for 2030.

Get involved

There are plenty of ways you can get involved in helping Edinburgh Napier achieve its sustainability commitments, such as joining the Edinburgh Napier Sustainable Society or working with the students' association, ENSA.

If you're interested in biodiversity, we also have the Lions' Gate Garden and Hedgehog Friendly Campus project for anybody who wants to volunteer in making our campuses greener places to work and study.
