Library Introduction Sessions

Welcome to the session on using the library. In this session, we'll cover the services offered within our online and physical libraries.
We'll go over where to find information, how to find a book and journal article on LibrarySearch, how to connect to the university's Wi-Fi eduroam, the Napier University app, and the various services we offer within our library spaces. To find the online catalogue and a list of subject guides, search for a library in your MyNapier account. Please remember to sign in to your library account using your Edinburgh Napier University login details.
You will have access to reading lists on your Moodle module, or you can follow the link to reading lists.
Napier reading lists are a great place to start when searching for information on a chosen topic.
The library offers a wider range of reading, which you can access by searching for books and journal articles using the library search.
You also have access to various databases within your subject area via lib guides.
Please note that Google won't show you everything you have access to.
Through the university, there are a wide range of resources and databases that you can access.
We'll discuss these more later. Let's look at how to find books and journal articles on LibrarySearch.
Before we begin, please note that some ebooks can be downloaded in, some cannot.
The length of time it takes to download resources can vary, and you will only be allowed to save or print a limited number of pages.

Welcome to library search.
Here we can search the catalogue view reading lists, look for databases and search for journals before starting your search.
Please remember to sign in using the login button in the top right hand corner.
You can refine your search depending on the resources you are looking for.
Let's start by looking for a book. This brings up a list of items related to our search.
On the right hand side. We can filter our search by availability, format, library collection and so on.
As you can see, there are multiple versions available for our book.
Here we can see the title is available to read online, and there's also a physical item that we can find at our Merchiston campus.
If you would like to find the book on the shelf, take a note of this shelf mark.
We'll go into finding books using the shelf mark a bit later on. Consider keywords related to your search and remember to use the filters to narrow down larger searches. Here we can get a copy of the citation a permalink to this journal article, and a link to the journal article itself. If we want to save this article for later, we can click on the red pin at the top.

This particular article is available on ProQuest. Let's take a look. This gives us access to the journal article as a PDF. If we like, we can review the abstract to learn more about this article. And we can also download the article as a PDF using the download button.
Library databases are searchable websites containing information about electronic journals. There are specialist databases for different subject areas. You will use databases more as you progress through your degree course. Academic journals and databases may ask you to log in.

Use your university username and password. A few journals and databases have non-standard usernames and passwords. You'll see a link to these in Library Search. We've covered a basic introduction of how to find books and journals online using Library Search. To learn more about subject specific databases, please see the subject guide for your subject. We have libraries at each of our three campuses Sighthill, Craiglockhart and Merchiston.

Each library has a help desk. Please ring the bell for assistance. The libraries are equipped with study species, which are available to book via Resource Booker. The libraries are equipped with study spaces which are available to book via Resource Booker, Quiet and Silent spaces, PCs, individual study desks, and group study desks.

Sighthill and Craiglockhart are open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Merchiston is 24 hour access.
Please note that the buildings are swipe access only after 6 p.m. on weekdays and at weekends.
You can connect to your own devices to Eduroam when you are on campus.
Please use your student email address in university. Password scanning the QR code on screen will take you directly to instructions on how to set up eduroam.
The Edinburgh Napier University app allows you to access your digital ID card, add print credit, book study rooms via Resource Booker and access Moodle emails and your library account. Simply search for Edinburgh Napier in your app store. When logging in, please use your student email and university password.

To find a book on a shelf. We first need to know its shelf mark.
You can find the shelf mark by searching for the book on library search and taking note of which campus it is available.
In this case, this book is available within the Main Stock at Craiglockhart Library at 338 point 5PE.
There are posters at the end of each shelf which shows the shelf marks contained within. Once you've taken note of the shelf mark for your book, check the corresponding shelf.

Our libraries offer a range of self-service equipment. You can check out libraries, books, and print all using your student card.
Our library laptops are loadable for 14 days. You'll need your library card, physical or digital to borrow and return library laptops. You can also scan your student card at one of our self-service kiosks to borrow books.

Please note that you do not need your student card to return books. Simply press the return button, scan your book, and drop it into the returns box. You can copy, print, and scan documents using library printers. Please note that you can also log in to the library printers without your student card, using your university login details. You can top up your print credit at any time using the Edinburgh Napier University app.
Books you have reserved via library search can be collected at the click and collect point in your chosen library.
