Late returns
The majority of our services are free (for example borrowing books and inter-library loans), but we'll ask you to pay fines if you return an item late after it has been requested by another user.
The books and other items in the library are available to a very large number of people, and many are in constantly high demand.
Usually when you borrow an item, it will renew automatically so that you can keep it for longer.
If someone else requests a book that you have out on loan, automatic renewals stop and items will not automatically renew (see our Automatic Renewals page for more information). We will recall the item and ask you to return it within seven days or by the due date if less than seven days. If you return a recalled item late, or fail to return a recalled item at all, we will ask you to pay a fine.
If you have overdue recalled items or fines over £5 on your account, you will be unable to borrow new items. Existing loans which have not been requested will renew automatically.
To help you keep up to date with your loans, we will send you a weekly activity report and you can also check the due dates on LibrarySearch> My Account.
If you return items late, we'll ask you to pay
- £1 per day if an item has been requested by another user and is not returned by the due date. This is capped at £15 per item
- No fines for an overdue laptop. If a laptop is overdue for more than 14 days, it will be locked remotely.
If you have fines over £5, you will not be able to borrow new items.
If you don't return a loan by the maximum or recalled due date, you will be blocked from borrowing until it's returned.
We will send you overdue reminders and after 14 days we will assume the item is lost. We will send you a lost item bill for £50 to cover the replacement cost of books or other library resources. You can supply a replacement copy of the same or a later edition if you prefer.
The replacement cost of a laptop is £750.
