Late Returns

The books and other items in the library are available to a very large number of people, and many are in constantly high demand. Most borrowed items are renewed automatically. If borrowed items are requested, automatic renewals stop and items will not automatically renew (see our Automatic Renewals page for more information).

We will recall the item and ask you to return it within seven days or by the due date if less than seven days. If you return a recalled item late, or fail to return a recalled item at all, we will ask you to pay a fine.

If you have overdue recalled items or fines on your account, you will be unable to borrow new items. Existing loans which have not been requested will renew automatically.

To help you keep up to date with your loans, we will send you a week activity report and you can also check the due dates on LibrarySearch> My Account.

We'll ask you to pay

  • £1 per item per day for items that have been recalled
  • £1 per item per hour for items on Reserve Collection and 3 Hour loans
  • £5 per laptop per day

If you have fines you will not be able to borrow new items.

If you don't return a loan by the maximum or recalled due date, you will be blocked from borrowing until it's returned. We will send you overdue reminders and after 14 days we will assume the item is lost. We will send you a lost item bill for the replacement cost, plus a £10 administrative charge. You can supply a replacement copy of the same or a later edition if you prefer.
