Information Services has student computer suites available at each of the main campuses.

Computer Suites are available on all campuses providing around 1,335 Windows PCs, 400 "thin client" PCs and 23 Apple Macs, as well as areas for laptops and collaborative spaces.

The Jack Kilby Computing Centre (JKCC) at Merchiston is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has user support for over 70 hours per week during Trimesters 1 and 2.  

In addition to the computers available on campus, Information Services offers the following services and equipment:


The Desktop Service


All fixed student PCs run a centralised desktop image which is regularly revised and updated to maintain performance and functionality.


The main features of the Desktop Service include:

  • User Authentication
  • Locally installed applications
  • Up to two hundred centrally delivered applications including Microsoft Office
  • Centrally controlled anti-virus scanning
  • A personal network data area (your H drive)
  • Shared network data spaces
  • Shared network printers
  • Free internet access using Internet Explorer

Information Services regularly performs security updates on the network. You should not attempt to patch a University PC yourself.


All student PCs run a desktop based on the Windows operating system.

There are Macs available in the JKCC and Library at Merchiston, the Younger Computing Suite and Library at Craiglockhart and the LRC at Sighthill for use by all students.

Rules and Regulations

You will need your matriculation card to access some of the computer suites; you must carry your student card with you at all times.
Before using the computer suites, you should read our Information Security Policy and our Computer Suites Acceptable Use Policy.
