Fire and emergency procedures
On this page, you will find information regarding University procedures for what should happen in the case of a fire or other emergency.If you discover a fire
- Immediately operate the nearest alarm call point.
- Call the Fire Service: dial (9) 999 and give address of campus.
- Leave the building by the nearest exit.
On hearing the alarm
- Leave the area immediately making sure doors are closed as you leave.
- Follow arrows to nearest escape exit.
- Do not use lifts.
- Proceed to the designated Fire Assembly Point and await further instructions.
- Students with mobility difficulties should not use stairways but should proceed to the nearest disabled refuge/temporary waiting space and activate the two way communications panel (Merchiston, Craiglockhart and Sighthill).
You must familiarise yourself with the fire action instructions printed on the blue and white notices which are displayed throughout the University.
Also check the green and white directional arrows to the fire exits from your classrooms. If you have any doubts please ask your lecturer or tutor.
Assembly Points
On hearing the fire alarm please follow the emergency procedure and go to the nearest assembly point.
Craiglockhart
- A: Service road opposite the visitors' car park
- B: Disabled car park at north of building
- C: End of roadway at south-west of building adjacent to large decked area
Sighthill
- A: Area adjacent to main campus entrance
- B: South-west corner of car park, adjacent to energy centre
- C: East car park
Merchiston
- A: Pillar in main courtyard at front of building
- B: West car park
- C: East car park behind refectory
Merchiston Avenue
- A: To right of main entrance
Students requiring assistance in an emergency evacuation
All students who would require assistance in an emergency evacuation should arrange a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) through their Disability Contact / Disability & Inclusion Team.
Under no circumstances should disabled students use lifts to evacuate the building.
Disabled refuge areas have been provided at Craiglockhart, Merchiston and Sighthill* to assist anyone who may need assistance in an emergency evacuation and cannot immediately exit the building. These have been fitted with two-way communication systems.
*Sighthill refuges are signed as "temporary waiting spaces"
