Graduation for transnational education (TNE) students

All students who have studied overseas with our partner institutions are welcome to attend the graduation ceremonies in Edinburgh to receive their awards. This is a great way to connect with the University, with the Edinburgh Napier academic staff, and with fellow students who are celebrating their own personal successes.

Graduation ceremonies are held in Edinburgh at the start of July and at the end of October each year. They take place over two to three days in the Usher Hall in the centre of Edinburgh. Each ceremony lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

In order to attend a graduation ceremony in Edinburgh, you must have successfully completed your programme of study.

You are only permitted to graduate once with your Edinburgh Napier award, either in your country of study or in the UK. Your options are:

  • Attend a ceremony in Edinburgh in the UK, or
  • Attend a ceremony in your country of study, or
  • Graduate In Absentia (not attend) from the ceremony in your country of study

You are not permitted to graduate In Absentia at a UK ceremony.

If you intend to graduate in Edinburgh, you must inform your partner institution.

Awards are legally conferred by the Chancellor at our graduation ceremonies and after that you can receive your university parchment (degree certificate).

Information about guest tickets is available on our Guest Tickets page.

Your Parchment (degree certificate)

Your Edinburgh Napier award is formally conferred by the Chancellor or a representative at our graduation ceremonies. If you attend a UK ceremony you will receive your parchment at the Usher Hall on the day of your graduation ceremony.

If you choose to attend a UK Ceremony, the parchment will be produced following the UK style of parchment, so the graduate’s name will appear on the parchment in 'first name followed by surname' order. This may differ from the name order on a parchment produced for an overseas ceremony.

Academic Dress

All graduands must wear the appropriate Ede & Ravenscroft gown and hood for their award to be conferred. More information is available on our Academic Dress page.
